Fear is a complicated emotion, but I'd like to share one way it impacts our life. Imagine this for a moment: you're a police officer, and you are moving towards a bad guy who has a gun. You are almost at him, when he notices you. At that moment, if he shows fear, you know have him. If you show fear, you know he'll get you. We can't control our fears, but we can control when we choose to show them to others. Don't let yourself know you're scared. The other guy within you isn't always on your side. In those moments, we often are facing ourselves, instead of a bad-guy. And what we tell ourselves is what makes all the difference. So don't show any fear, to the bad-guy out there or the other-guy within. They say that cowards die a million deaths, but it'sa brave thing to take on your fear every day, and an even bigger success to defeat the Self's greatest enemy. Some of you might laugh at me using this quote, but it's from Steve Irwin (the Animal Planet guy). He said about himself that "I probably don't show fear, but I suffer from fear like everyone else." Sure, he died because of his lack of fear of deadly animals, but can you imagine the wonderful life he lived by conquering that fear daily for 30+ years? Many of us worry about things like bills, friendships, and work. We let that worry become part of our long term memory, with 1 of 2 acts called Maintenance Rehearsal or Elaborative Rehearsal, and it's that long-term memory which causes us to begin doubting ourselves. And from self-doubt comes fear, the greatest enemy of the Self. That, right there, gives us to solution to defeating our fear. Eliminate worry, erase self-doubt, and take away the fuels which allow fear to thrive.
